UW-Fond du Lac faculty to present service learning projects at regional symposium to be held at Marquette University

Patricia Eby Dr. Michael Jurmu Dr. Ronald Theys Ashley Garner

Four members of the University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac campus community will be presenters at the Service Learning Faculty Symposium and Showcase to be held at Marquette University in Milwaukee on May 21.

Patricia Eby, associate dean and music professor; Dr. Michael Jurmu, geography and geology professor; and Dr. Ronald Theys, chemistry professor will each give a presentation on how they incorporated service learning into their courses. Jurmu will be joined by Ashly Garner, AmeriCorps*VISTA coordinator and UW-Fond du Lac alumna.

Eby’s session will focus on the students in UW-Fond du Lac’s vocal jazz ensemble who explored music with residents of an assisted-living senior facility. The sessions began with a general exploration of music and led to a senior-coached performance.

Jurmu and Garner will present their project known as TACK (Teaching Atmospheric Concepts to Kids). Students from an introductory level physical geography weather and climate course at UW-Fond du Lac created simple lesson plans to teach weather concepts at two local Boys and Girls Club after school programs.

Theys will discuss the impact on student learning, along with benefits to community members, when pre-nursing students at UW-Fond du Lac interviewed senior citizens and later presented results about their diets or medications during their childhood, as teenagers, as adults, and as senior citizens.

This symposium is a Midwest regional conference for service learning faculty to share and showcase their service learning practice and projects. It is co-sponsored by Marquette University’s Service Learning Program, Wisconsin Campus Compact, Marquette’s Institute for Urban Life and the Manresa Project.

UW-Fond du Lac is one of the 13 campuses of the UW Colleges, which are part of the 26 campus UW System. UW-Fond du Lac offers a freshman-sophomore curriculum leading to the Associate of Arts and Science degree, which is the foundation of any bachelor's degree program.
