Native American Drum Group to give educational
performance at UW-Fond du Lac on April 21
The Native American drum group Spirit Bear
will give a free educational performance at 6:15
pm on Monday, April 21 in the Prairie Theater at
UW-Fond du Lac, 400 University Drive.
The group will be performing for Professor
Paisley
Harris’ Multicultural America class and the
campus Multicultural Club and all students and
members of the public are invited to attend.
Spirit Bear is led by Richard O'Kimosh, Jr.
from the Menominee Nation.
Richie Plass, a member of the Menominee
nation and co-host of the Wisconsin Public Radio
(WPR) program "Kalhiweyo'se," will discuss the
tradition of native drumming at the performance.
Plass creates diversity programming for
teachers and does extensive work on Native
American mascot issues, and is the author of
“Growing up on Turtle Island,” a book of poetry.
The name of the radio program - "Kalhiweyo'se" -
is an Oneida word that translates to "She brings
good messages." The radio program airs Thursday
evenings, 10:00 pm to midnight, on WPR, 89.3 FM.
Spirit Bear’s performance is co-sponsored by
the UW-Fond du Lac Multicultural Club and
History Department.
