Native American Drum Group to give educational performance at UW-Fond du Lac on April 21

The Native American drum group Spirit Bear will give a free educational performance at 6:15 pm on Monday, April 21 in the Prairie Theater at UW-Fond du Lac, 400 University Drive.

The group will be performing for Professor Paisley Harris’ Multicultural America class and the campus Multicultural Club and all students and members of the public are invited to attend.

Spirit Bear is led by Richard O'Kimosh, Jr. from the Menominee Nation.

Richie Plass, a member of the Menominee nation and co-host of the Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR) program "Kalhiweyo'se," will discuss the tradition of native drumming at the performance.

Plass creates diversity programming for teachers and does extensive work on Native American mascot issues, and is the author of “Growing up on Turtle Island,” a book of poetry. The name of the radio program - "Kalhiweyo'se" - is an Oneida word that translates to "She brings good messages." The radio program airs Thursday evenings, 10:00 pm to midnight, on WPR, 89.3 FM.

Spirit Bear’s performance is co-sponsored by the UW-Fond du Lac Multicultural Club and History Department.
