Nov. 5 Can a Vegetarian be an Environmentalist?
presented by Roger Rigterink, philosophy professor
Maybe, "It's easy to assume that vegetarians would be sympathetic to environmentalism, but given the intellectual defense of these two positions are they really compatible with each other?"
Feb. 4 Hyphens on the Home Front: Ethnicity, Patriotism and War
presented by Lisa Schreibersdorf, English professor
In the years leading up to World War I, the term “hyphenated American” became nearly synonymous with the term “German-American.” Scrutiny of German-Americans intensified, and the desire to maintain German culture in the U.S. was suddenly labeled traitorous. This presentation examines the World War I era controversies over German-American ethnic identity as a way of raising larger questions about the connections between ethnic identity, culture, art, and wartime patriotism in the twentieth century and today.

Learn what kind of film and video work is currently being produced in Wisconsin, how we compare to our Midwestern neighbors, and what changes may occur with the new film production tax incentives planned for 2008.
