Feb. 4 – Hyphens on the Home Front: Ethnicity, Patriotism and War
presented by Lisa Schreibersdorf, English professor

In the years leading up to World War I, the term “hyphenated American” became nearly synonymous with the term “German-American.” Scrutiny of German-Americans intensified, and the desire to maintain German culture in the U.S. was suddenly labeled traitorous. This presentation examines the World War I era controversies over German-American ethnic identity as a way of raising larger questions about the connections between ethnic identity, culture, art, and wartime patriotism in the twentieth century and today.

Mar. 3 – Film Making in Wisconsin
presented by Frances Perkins, communication and theatre arts professor

Hollywood...in Wisconsin?! Maybe not yet, but if Wisconsin film makers have anything to do with it, more cameras will be rolling into our state soon. Learn what kind of film and video work is currently being produced in Wisconsin, how we compare to our Midwestern neighbors, and what changes may occur with the new film production tax incentives planned for 2008.

May 5 – Cinco de Mayo: A Look at Mexico Past and Present
presented by Anita Klatkiewicz, world languages lecturer.

An overview of the significance of Cinco de Mayo, important events in Mexico's history, and a glimpse of modern day Mexican Celebrations (not all of which happen on the Cinco de Mayo).
