KIDS WILL BE CLOWNS
Instructor: Susan Riegel, entertainer, professional clown, balloon artist
Clowns enrich the lives of the young and the young at heart with humor, laughter and silliness! Come and learn the art of clowning through demonstrations and activities that show you the history, style, skills and creativity of clown entertainers. Together you will apply face paints in the style of a clown that you choose and enjoy learning to make balloon animals. Bring your funny bone and join Sunshine the Clown for a week of celebration and fun!

ANCIENT EGYPT
Instructor: Darlene Green, middle school instructor and Egypt aficionado
Who was King Tut? We will find out as we study the Egyptian civilization of 5,000 years ago, discovering things we can learn from their society. Become aware of their art, symbols and architecture, and how to write their hieroglyphic language and recognize their mysterious gods. Our week together will end with a special reenactment of the mummification process!

DRUMMING
Instructor: Kari Adamson, music specialist, Lakeshore Elementary and Fond du Lac School District
Sing songs while moving and drumming to rhythmic African and Latin beats. You will learn hand drumming techniques along with how to read rhythm notation and create your own improvisational style. Invite your family and friends to come and see you perform your newly gained skills at the final group assembly on Friday.

WEARABLE ART
Instructor: Charles Wydeven, art instructor, Fond du Lac Area Catholic Education System
This fun course gives you hands-on experience in creating art that can be worn. You will make unique hats out of paper mache’, painting and embellishing them with found objects. Learn several techniques used in the creation of bracelets and necklaces. Design and decorate a beautiful shirt using several tie-dye techniques. Please bring a
white t-shirt to class.

CHEMKIDS
Instructor: Stephanie Ballard, Science Instructor, Campbellsport School District
In this interactive chemistry class, you will perform experiments to help you understand properties of matter such as viscosity and density. You will work in teams to build a density column, and use materials that you can find in your own homes, such as syrup, ketchup and corn starch, to illustrate other properties of matter. You will also learn
about what can happen when different chemicals combine to form mixtures and how the chemicals can create some unusual results! Put on your scientist goggles and come have some fun!

JAPAN: LAND OF THE RISING SUN
Instructor: Stacey Frank, teacher, Fond du Lac School District
Pack your imaginary bags because here’s your ticket to exotic Japan. Take a trip through the schools, culture, history, food, art, language and people of the “Land of the Rising Sun”. As you explore one of the most beautiful, complex and timeless cultures of our world, you will eat, speak, write, and sing your way to a new understanding of this exciting, yet peaceful place. This fascinating experience is one-of-a-kind!

BLAST OFF (THE HOMEMADE WAY)!!
Instructor: Carey Woodward, assistant professor of physics and astronomy, UW-Fond du Lac
Think physics is boring? What IS physics, anyhow? Well, it’s certainly not boring when you use it to create all sorts of things that float or shoot into the air, sometimes surrounded in fire! Join us as we build and launch several fun and exciting (but safe) devices that leave the Earth’s surface, including: the Cincinnati fire kite, dry ice rocket, potato cannon, soda bottle rocket, flaming bubbles, matchbook rockets, and more. We’ll learn about physical concepts such as pressure, momentum, and buoyancy…but mostly, we’ll have fun!

COMIC BOOK, CARTOONING & MANGA ILLUSTRATION
Instructor: John Scotello, assistant professor of art, UW-Fond du Lac
Do you have a desire to create artwork in the style of comic books, cartoons, and Japanese Manga? Using the motif of the comic book hero, explore the process of drawing as a way of seeing, investigating, and experiencing. You will learn to use line, shape, value, texture, space, proportion and composition while at the same time striving for increased eye-hand coordination.

SINGING & DANCING TO HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL
Instructor: Theresa Goebel, vocal coach, acting instructor
Come spend the week working on the hottest musical in the country! Theater games, improv, and acting will highlight the week. In this class, you get the opportunity to learn the most popular song and its choreography, which will be performed at the closing ceremony for family and friends. So just remember, “We’re all in this together!”

A DIFFERENT LOOK AT HISTORY
Instructor: Eric Anderson, middle school teacher, Fond du Lac School District, Winner of “Excellence in Education” Award 2007-08
Tired of the same old “book-learning” history classes? Then try this class that gives us history in a different way. We’ll look at several time periods in history using a hands-on approach. We’ll see how wrong a historian can be, look at the real George Washington, see how hard it was for Columbus to get to the New World and how big his ships really were. We’ll participate in a mock historical dig to experience what an archeologist looks for when seeking discoveries in the field!

FIRST TIME WITH FOOD
Instructor: Christine Frank, middle school F/CE teacher, Fond du Lac School District
Experience the good effects of eating with family and friends, making meal preparation an enjoyable and satisfying activity. This course will inspire young chefs with delicious recipes and basic skills that everyone should have in the kitchen. You will learn safe, simple and healthful cooking techniques, as well as proper etiquette and table setting style. Your family will love it when you create a special meal for them later at home! Don’t forget to bring your appetite.

DETECTIVES—GET A CLUE!
Instructor: John T. Matysik, counselor at Rosenow & Lakeshore Elementary Schools, Fond du Lac School District
Experience lots of activities and practice the various skills associated with being a detective. Activities will include analyzing clues, use of gadgets, role of disguises, cracking codes, and fingerprinting. Time will be spent using all of your five senses. You’ll finish the course with a large scavenger hunt that will test your skills learned through the week!

BOOK WRITING MADE FUN
Instructor: Trish Draves, special education teacher, North Fond du Lac School District
Do you have some funny, interesting, exciting tales of things that have happened to you that you’ve thought would make a good story? Have you ever wanted to write and illustrate your own book? We will explore books by other young authors, learning from their examples, then create and illustrate our own stories. You will take home your own “published” book to share with others.

BEAD BASICS
Instructor: Trista Holz, UW-Fond du Lac continuing education ad hoc instructor
In this workshop you will learn the art of fused glass and beading. You will create your own glow-in-the-dark fused glass bead to incorporate into a necklace and will hand select gemstone beads for the creation of wearable art. Every session guarantees fun with emphasis on educating you about the bead making process, gems and minerals, jewelry making techniques, and the history of decorative beading. Projects tailored for boys as well as girls will be completed during the week.

ORIGAMI: MORE THAN FOLDING PAPER
Instructor: James Adamson, Instructor at Chegwin Elementary School, Fond du Lac School District
Using the art of Japanese paper folding you will learn about math! Basic geometric shapes will be created within a variety of origami shapes including: cubes, assorted animals and other pieces. Learn geometric concepts and terms, like area, perimeter, volume, edge, corner, face, while having fun doing it and creating art. So, you’re not just folding paper; you’re developing math skills!

CAPTAIN RETURNS – DOG MATH
Instructor: Paul Biddick, Middle School Instructor, Rosendale-Brandon School District
You will be introduced to a lovable 7-1/2 year old lovable dog named Captain. We will solve “hypothetical problems” involving math. Using Captain as our assistant we will use time and distance measurement to work on more complicated things. Who takes more steps in a mile, Captain or you? If we wanted to build a play area for Captain, and we only had 24 meters of fencing, what are our set-up options? If we tied Captain to a rope and a stake, how much area would he have for playing? Paw-lease come and join us for a woofing good time!
