STUDIO DRAWING

Here is the perfect experience for the young Michelangelo seeking to learn the use of line, shape, value, texture, space, proportion and composition in creating unique masterpieces. Explore the process of drawing as a way of seeing, investigating & experiencing. You will have fun working from an easel in a professional art studio and learning about art history and art making.
CHESS AND MATHEMATICS

Discover the ways these two disciplines are intertwined, while involved in daily warm-up, instruction and individual play. Through learning beginning to advanced techniques of the game and using algebraic notation, you will gain insight and experience within this strategic game of the ages. Daily chess problems will challenge you within all aspects of the gameopening, mid-game, and end-game. Bring a notebook to document your moves with chess notation and journal chess vocabulary. COOKING AROUND THE WORLD

What better way is there to learn about various cultures than through celebrating their food traditions? Explore and understand ethnic and regional diversity by learning about food specific to those areas. This culinary journey will leave you with a wealth of skills and the confidence to prepare a variety of meals. This is much more than a cooking class, as you are introduced to cooking techniques, chef utensils, etiquette, nutrition, safety, kitchen math and new foods, so come enjoy this exciting and educating adventure!
FANTASTIC CHEMISTRY!

In this hands-on chemistry class, you will perform experiments to learn about the nature of mattersolids, liquids and gases and to create the especially weird type of matter called a “thixotrope.” Perform numerous experiments to figure out how much acid is in everyday products such as vinegar, soda and juice, experiments that will illustrate how metals react with each other, and that will literally provide a SPARK to your brain! Come learn some chemistry and experience a SHOCK to your system!
SINGING & DANCING TO HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL

Come spend the week working on the hottest musical in the country! Theater games, improv, and acting will highlight the week. In this class, you get the opportunity to learn the most popular song and its choreography, which will be performed at the closing ceremony for family and friends. So just remember, “We’re all in this together!”

This incredible class involves making your own unique, beautiful, keepsake books. You will paint papers and use
them to create books that celebrate your creativity and imagination. Discover the enjoyment when you use collage, mixed media, writing, drawing and painting as a means of expressing your artistic potential. Join us for this fun-filled event. Bring an old shirt to use as an art smock.
JAPAN: LAND OF THE RISING SUN

Pack your imaginary bags because here’s your ticket to exotic Japan. Take a trip through the schools, culture, history, food, art, language and people of the “Land of the Rising Sun”. As you explore one of the most beautiful, complex and timeless cultures of our world, you will eat, speak, write, and sing your way to a new understanding of this exciting, yet peaceful place. This fascinating experience is one-of-a-kind!
MINDSTORMS ROBOTIC CHALLENGE
Instructor: John Papenheim, engineer/technician/businessman, mentor for Fondy Fire FIRST Robotics, founder/mentor FDL Junior Robotics Leagues
Come to build and program a robot using Lego Mindstorm kits, designing them to compete in a pre-defined game. Utilizing the kits’sensors, motors and a microcontroller, your robot must complete specific tasks to earn points in a final competition. You will cooperatively work in three teams of four, assisted by student members of the FONDY FIRE high school robotics team to problem-solve your way through this challenge. There is only one session of this course offered, so register early!
KINETIC ART

In this new approach to learning 21st century technology, you will create a work of art with moving parts, light and sound. Spinning flowers that dance to the music, turning wheels, optical illusions, butterflies that shake and flash …the only limit is your imagination! Using a computer programmable microprocessor to control your artwork’s behavior, you will write a computer program to customize the “personality” of your creation. You can reprogram, tweak and further explore the possibilities of your creation after you have taken it home. There is only one session of this course offered, so register early!
PAPER MACHE’ ART A LA CLAUS OLDENBURG
Instructor: Amber Platte, art teacher, Ripon School District
You will have a wonderfully unusual art experience as you create large-scale, whimsical sculptures from paper mache’, using junk food wrappers as “props,” and painting them with tempera for an attractive finish. In addition you will study the works of Claus Oldenburg, and other pop artists, who illustrate what artists can do when thinking “outside the box.” This unique opportunity for learning and creativity is not to be missed!
3D ANAGLYPHS USING PHOTOSHOP
Instructor: Trisha Branson, art education instructor, MPTC
Have you ever wondered just how 3D images are made? In this class you will make your own 3D glasses as well as a 3D self-portrait using Photoshop. (Viewing your artwork in 3D requires nothing more than a pair of red/blue glasses.) The method we use to create the self portraits is called anaglyph images, which were seen in theaters when 3D movies hit their peak in the 1950s. If you are interested in graphic design and want a fun, challenging project, then this is the class for you!
LET’S WEAVE A BASKET
Instructor, Sun Paulick, local artist
For thousands of years across many societies local artisans have created beautiful baskets by weaving together plants and fibers found in the environments around them. In this imaginative class you will learn how to handle the tools and materials used to construct your very own homemade basket. From the beginning steps of measuring, cutting and marking the spokes & weavers, to the techniques for bending, weaving and finishing, you will become skilled in this ancient art form. If time permits you will also make origami designs to put in your gift basket to take home and amaze your friends and family. There is only one session of this course offered, so register early!
