The Financial Aid Process: A Summary
Step #1: The student and family (if applicable)
- Complete the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online or a paper copy of the FAFSA may also be completed and mailed.
- Review the Student Aid Report (SAR), a summary of the information provided on the FAFSA, received by mail approximately 2-4 weeks later.
- Verify the information on the SAR and verify that the school the student intends to attend is listed on the SAR.
Step #2: The college receives an electronic version of the SAR .
- Calculates the student's eligibility

Sends 2 copies of an award letter offering grants, loans, work-study to meet the calculated need.
Step #3: The student
- Accepts or declines the aid and submits one signed copy of the financial aid award letter to the Financial Aid Office (retains the other copy for personal records). Note: The signed award letter must be submitted to the FA Office to receive any grants, loans, or student work opportunities)
Step #4: The college
- Disburses the financial aid on the basis on the number of credits the student is carrying at the end of the 6th day of class(es).
- Credits any federal grants will automatically to the student account. Any remaining funds will be issued as a change check made out to the student.
- Requires payment of any remaining balance due by the end of the 10th day of class(es).

What if my financial aid is not here by the time tuition is due? |

Stop in the Financial Aid Office to check the status. If the student has aid offered we will issue a deferment up to the amount offered or the total tuition (whichever is higher).

See the Business Office to either pay the balance or apply for the partial payment plan.

If I accept work-study am I issued a check for that amount? |

No, you work for a department, submit a timesheet every two weeks, and receive a paycheck for the hours worked.

How many credits do I need to carry to receive financial aid? |

A Pell Grant Award is based on full-time (12 or more credits) but is prorated if less than full-time. Eligibility for other grants, loans and work-study is based on at least half time enrollment, or 6 or more credits.
